Loving Our Husbands By Encouraging Our Husbands

encouraging our husbands

Encouraging our husbands is a very important part of loving our husbands and is often counter culture. Women are not always known for building their husbands up but that is exactly what a biblical wife is called to do.

Titus 2:3-4 tells us to love our husbands. The past two blog posts have been based on loving our husbands by respecting them. Today we take this topic a step further and discuss encouraging our husbands.

April Rodgers and I did a CounterCulture Women’s video series based on loving our husbands. I hope you will take 11 minutes out of your day and let us share with you the importance and value of encouraging our husbands.

Encourage means to give support, confidence, or hope to, as well as, to help, stimulate, or develop.

Encouraging Our Husbands Builds Them Up

Our husbands need our admiration and affirmation. One way we give support and confidence to our husbands is by speaking words that build rather than tear down. The problem is that criticism often comes naturally to us, and it is the exact opposite of what our husbands need. God created us to be our husband’s helper. This isn’t a downgrade in the quality of person we are. We are equally as valuable as our husband. In fact, we complete them.

Two of my favorite proverbs are Proverbs 14:1 and Proverbs 31:26. Proverbs 14:1 says, The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands. WOW! Ladies, What kind of power and influence has God given us as women!

We have the power to build up or tear down. We have the power to affect our husbands and families positively or negatively. The reality is that we do affect our husbands and families one-way or the other.

Throughout my life I have built several houses. Those houses were built strong and solid. The thought of tearing my house down with my own hands provokes a destructive image. I would have to work hard and do a lot of damage to tear down my house. Proverbs 14:1 speaks of our home, our husbands, our children, and our family.

How do we make sure we build up those we love, and in light of our discussion today, our husbands?

Wisdom in Encouraging Our Husbands

Proverbs 14:1 links the woman who builds her house with wisdom. Which connects us to Proverbs 31:26.

She opens her mouth with wisdom,

and on her tongue is the law of kindness.

Proverbs 31:26

These 2 proverbs both speak of a wise woman. One wise woman builds up her house while the other wise woman speaks with wisdom. The key to building our home is wisdom that comes out of our mouth. When we speak as encouragers, we see that our words can make all the difference in building the kind of homes that we want to live in, happy healthy homes. Isn’t that what we all want?

When Encouraging Your Husband is Hard

If you find it hard to speak encouragement to your spouse, ask God to help you because this is such a big deal in learning to be our husband’s greatest cheerleader, affirming them in whatever they do. Ask God to reveal anything in you that hinders you in this area and then to transform you into the woman of God and the wife of God that He intended you to be.

Use Proverbs 31:26 as a prayer for yourself. Ask God to help you open your mouth with wisdom and rule your tongue by the law of kindness.
