When Life is Unfair

unfair

Life is unfair. We all know it. We all feel it, even from a very early age. My 2 year old granddaughter shows me that every time her parents tell her no or take something away from her that she wants at that moment. Looking back across my own life I see situations I deem, or at least at the moment as unfair. I know I am not alone because unfair circumstances are a simply a reality of life. Maybe you might find yourself, or your situation among my list.

Life is unfair when:

  • Someone else got the promotion that should have been yours…
  • You worked so hard and lost your job anyway…
  • You paid a lot and got cheated out of what was rightfully yours…
  • Your coworker got the credit for your hard work…
  • Someone else’s mistake cost you money, pain, time, etc…
  • You were in the wrong place at the wrong time…
  • Falsely accused or blamed for something you did not do…
  • The person you deeply trusted betrayed, rejected, humiliated you…
  • The call came that turned your life upside down…
  • You received the doctor’s diagnosis…
  • Other people work the system and gain and you do right and loose…
  • You are a victim… (Are You A Victim? Overcoming Deep Wounds)

In Psalm 69:1-4 the psalmist David, wrote about those who hated him without cause, about those who were his enemies wrongfully and he even said, “Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it.” David’s words express the unfairness of his situation. Life has always been unfair because life has unavoidable storms.

We can’t stay focused on what is unfair.

When the storm rages in our life, we usually feel the unfairness of our struggle. It is natural and normal to feel this way, but we can’t let ourselves stay there. We can’t stay focused on the wrong, the hurt, the offense…. When all we can think about is how unfair our situation is, we have gotten our focus on the wrong thing. When life is unfair, change your focus.

Unfair

Remember that Jesus said:

“These things I have spoken to you that in Me you have peace.

In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer,

I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

We don’t have any unfair situation that could compare to Jesus’. He faced the most extreme and radical form of unfair that this world could deliver; yet, He overcame. We, who are in Christ, are meant to rise out of brokenness and unfair circumstances. However, the only way we overcome is by taking our eyes off our difficult situations, our tribulations, and focus our attention on what God says.

Overcome what is unfair by changing your focus.

2 years ago a storm raged in my own life. I got so focused on the situation that I could not see anything else. All I saw was the darkness, the bad, the devil, and the danger. One day I discussed this situation with my mother-in-law who is a godly, strong, woman of faith. She said, “Pat, you have got to get your eyes off the situation and back onto God’s Word. Stop talking about what you see with your physical eyes and say what God says. Speak faith according to what God says in His word.”

This was a major turning point for me. She spoke to me what I teach others, but the reality is, when we are personally going through a storm, it is easy to get our eyes focused on the situation. Once I turned my eyes, heart, and faith back to God’s word, I was a different person and God began to slowly change the situation. Now I am celebrating miracles I have seen God do over the past 2 years. He transformed a situation I once thought was hopeless.

So dear sister, I want to encourage you. Sometimes the fastest way to change our focus is to worship. I want to share a  worship video, There Is A Cloud that a friend shared with me when I was in the midst of my storm and it was such an encouragement to me. If you are in a storm and you can’t see anything but the storm, turn your eyes of faith back to the powerful and effective word of God. Trust and believe the truth of God’s word over your circumstances. And you will rise above the unfair circumstances of life and see God do great things you could never have anticipated!
