Freedom – We live in a land that is known for it’s freedom. Even living in a land of freedom, we can still live a life without true freedom. That was my story.
My life before Christ was a life of rebellion to everything that was right, a life of alcoholism, and a life of destructive decisions. I made a mess of every area of my life. Three words that could characterize my life before Jesus were failure, brokenness, and shame.
Freedom began with Christ
Just prior to my thirtieth birthday, I felt the need to take my two daughters to church. I had been raised in church and it seemed right to me to give them the same upbringing. Through a study of Revelation, I encountered Jesus and the truth of my own depravity and sin. I realized I needed a Savior. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and began a journey getting to know Him. Little by little I discovered and accepted His goodness and grace.
Walking in the new life that He gave me was hard in the beginning. I did not understand that Jesus’ grace, mercy, and love was enough to cover my lifetime of sin. I surely did not understand that I could have true freedom from that past life of sin. It took years for me to find freedom from alcoholism. It took even longer for me to find freedom from the shame of my past mistakes and failures.
Hope of Freedom
From that night when I accepted Jesus as my Savior, He put in my heart the knowledge that my hope was in Him. I knew if I would ever know true freedom and heart healing it would be through learning who Jesus was. So I read my Bible because the Bible told me about Jesus. And I went to church because Jesus was talked about in church. Slowly every area of my life began to change.
I remember believing I would never be able to go a day without at least thinking about drinking. It has been over 16 years since I had a drink of any form of alcohol. Amazingly, I never even think about drinking now. There are many other areas that He transformed, but this one was a major battle.
The one battle that lingered longest was the haunting of the past. This kept me from fully serving Jesus. Every time I ventured out I heard the enemy say, “Who do you think you are? Don’t you remember what your past was? God doesn’t want to use someone like you.” I realize now that the enemy used my past to hinder the work that I could do for Christ and His kingdom. No wonder the devil worked to keep me from realizing my true freedom in Christ. Now I know the truth and I am free!
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Another amazing gift is that I get to go to heaven and live with Jesus in perfection when this life is over. Jesus died in my place that I could live forever with Him in a perfect place, with perfect people, and perfect peace. I get to go to heaven not because I deserve to, but because I am His! Do you know that you are His?
And this is the testimony:
that God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in His Son.
1 John 5:11
Do you know that true freedom? Is there any area of your life that you have not discovered the full freedom in Christ He died for you to have? If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, you were meant to experience true freedom. It was His desire and His plan for you and I to live free from sin past and present.
But now having been set free from sin,
and having become slaves of God,
you have your fruit to holiness,
and the end, everlasting life.
Dear Heavenly Daddy,
Help me to dwell on Your word allowing Your truth to trump the lies of the devil who wants to steal freedom from me. I want to live in the fullness of Your freedom. Thank You for giving Your life for me to be free from sin and have everlasting life. I need Your help to overcome and live victorious. In Jesus name. Amen!
