9 Encouraging Bible Verses When You Are Waiting On The Lord

Waiting on the Lord

This past week I have been in Houston Texas with my youngest daughter awaiting her first baby and our fifth grandbaby. The waiting has proved to be a wide variety of emotions. From the early, unfruitful, labor contractions to every “induction” exercise known to women, to trying to rest, let it go, and wait for the inevitable. This started two weeks before her due date with us gently reminding her, her actual due date had not yet arrived. That tidbit of information, as my mother used to say, “Went in one ear and out the other ear.”

Waiting is probably one of the hardest things to do. Even when we know the waiting is only for a short, designated time, waiting still strains our patience muscles. However, there are so many good things in the waiting if we can take our eyes off the thing we don’t yet have but so desperately long for.

While we have been waiting on this baby, my daughter and I have spent so much time together that has been so sweet and special for us. I can’t wait to meet my new grandbaby, but I am thankful for this cherished time with my daughter. The truth is God has the details of this baby’s birth already planned.

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. Psalm 139:16

The Lord knows when she will arrive, and as we often say when struggling with waiting, “God’s timing is perfect.”

What The Bible Says About Waiting

God’s word assures us we will all have opportunities to wait because the Bible is filled with encouragement to trust God in the waiting. The word “wait” shows up eighty-five times in the Bible and “waiting” twenty-four times. The book of Psalm is one of my favorite places to go when seeking encouragement in the waiting because the psalmist seemed to really trust and rest in God during those seasons.

I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Psalm 130:6

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:3

I wait for You, You will answer, Lord my God. Psalm 38:15

Don’t miss that adverbs describing how he waited, “more” in Psalm 130:6 and “expectantly” in Psalm 5:3. We wait expectantly for a baby to enter this world because we have the evidence of a round belly to assure us that she is coming. But what about the times, when our physical circumstances give us no assurance? What will we cling to in that waiting? When we have no physical evidence, we often find ourselves tempted to lose heart and give up, but be encouraged in David’s words from Psalm 27:13-14

I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! Psalm 27:13-14

Psalm 130:5 shows the intensity of his waiting and how much he invested in trusting and hoping in the Lord.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope. Psalm 130:5

What Are You Waiting For?

Maybe you have a situation that You need His salvation, or a person you love that needs His salvation. Keep trusting and following God, His ways, and His word because He is faithful.

I wait for Your salvation, Lord, and I follow Your commands. Psalm 119:166

Why do we trust in God and put all our hope in Him when waiting seems to be the story of our lives? Because He is the one helping us and shielding us from things we may not have a clue of until we see Him face to face.

We wait in hope for the Lord, He is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20

When you wonder why your trusting and waiting aren’t paying off and those who don’t seek the Lord seem to be doing just fine, follow the wisdom of God’s word penned by a man acquainted with waiting.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Psalm 37:7

Scripture based prayer for you from the Psalms:

·      (Psalm 5:3; 27:13-14; 33:20; 37:7; 38:15; 119:166; 130:5)

Precious Heavenly Daddy, You know my season of waiting. You know the beginning and the end of it no matter what I see with my physical eyes, Help me be still before you and wait patiently for You. My hope is in You because you are my help and my shield. As I wait for You and Your salvation, I wait with my whole being, I put my hope in Your word, and I will follow Your commands. Lord, thank You for hearing my prayers as I lay them before you and wait expectantly, for Your answer. I will not lose heart and I am confident that I will see Your goodness in the land of the living. Strengthen my heart as I wait for You, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Much Love and Blessings,

Pat Domangue
