The I AM Statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John
Discovering the Mystery of I AM
When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time wondering why the Lord didn’t finish the sentence when He gave Moses His name. I AM who? I AM what? It made no sense to me that He said His name was an incomplete sentence. Then I grew up, met Jesus, and got to know Him through His word.
When it comes to biblical authors, John is probably my favorite of them all. I love his writing and have spent a great deal of time studying in John’s gospel, his three letters, and the book of Revelation. John devoted much of his writing addressing the mystery of who Jesus is and His divine nature. And it was there that I discovered what God wanted us to know when He declared Himself to be I AM.
One of the ways the gospel of John revealed the mystery of Jesus’ divinity is by recording the various I am statements He made during His earthly ministry. Each statement affirmed Jesus’ divine nature and spoke to an aspect of His character. The uniqueness of these identities of Jesus speaks to our times of need in whatever circumstances we face.
I AM Statements by Jesus in John’s Gospel:
John 4:26 – I AM the Messiah.
This is my personal favorite I AM statement Jesus made. It was the one time His statement was direct and to the point. The rest of the I AM statements are considered to be metaphorical. Ironically most scholars’ lists don’t include this one because it isn’t metaphorical. In my mind, how much more should it be included in every list since it is Jesus’ claim to be the long-awaited Messiah.
Another reason I love this divine declaration so much is because Jesus spoke clearly and directly to a broken, spiritually thirsty woman. Obviously, she had clung to the hope she found in the prophecies of the Messiah who would one day come to save her from the brokenness of her life.
Jesus fulfilled the prophecies. He came as the Messiah who was anointed to preach good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to those held in bondage to a lifetime of choices that did not satisfy or play out the way they hoped (Isaiah 61:1-3). Why this matters so much—because this is exactly what she needed. She needed I AM the Messiah to step into her life. And He does.
John 6:20 – It is I AM
In John 6:16-20, Jesus’ disciples were on the sea of Galilee when a great wind started blowing. Already afraid, their fear increased when they saw a figure walking on the water. Jesus spoke to them from the surface of the sea saying, It is I AM; do not be afraid.
Storms come to everyone’s life, but the good news of Jesus is that He is there in every storm we face. When we feel unsafe because of a storm, we do not have to be afraid. Instead, we simply believe and let Jesus be I AM who is the silencer of the storm and is present with us when life feels unstable. Psalm 139 tells us, He knows every minute detail of our life. Whatever situation we find ourselves in, Jesus wants to be I AM whatever you need.
John 6:35, 41, & 51 – I AM The Bread of Life
Jesus’ claim of Himself as the provider, sustainer, and nourisher for our lives was made in response to a discussion about the manna the Israelites had eaten during the Exodus. He identified Himself as that provision that had sustained them for forty years in the wilderness. They never went without daily sustenance. They always had all that they needed.
When we feel lacking or in need in our lives, Jesus wants to be I AM The Bread of Life, your provider, sustainer, and nourisher.
John 8:12 – I AM the Light of the World
In a world where darkness seems to increase rather than decrease, we have the Light of the World as our Savior. 1 John 1:5 says, God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. And John 1:5 tells us that darkness can’t overcome the light of Christ. Therefore, darkness cannot consume us because we have the Light of the World living within us.
Psalm 119:105 says, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. When spiritual darkness threatens to overtake, look to His word, look to Jesus who is I AM the Light of the World. In Christ, we have all the light we need in every season.
John 8:58 – Before Abraham was I AM
Jesus spoke to the Jews and immediately they understood His claim as identifying Himself as I AM. Their knowledge of the encounter with Moses and God on Mount Sinai had been the foundation of their religious experience. But Jesus wanted them to know Him as so much more than a religious experience.
He wanted them to trust Him as the eternal God who was present in their history as their Lord and Deliverer. And He wanted them to know that He was I AM equally present for them in their day and time.
If you would like more reading about Jesus divinity, I wrote about that in my blog post, Son of God: The True Identity and Divinity of Jesus
Jesus wants us to believe that as He was with the Israelites in their suffering and delivered them from bondage, He is the eternal I AM who is present for us today just as He was then.
John 10:9 – I AM the Door
Years ago a hummingbird got stuck in my garage for hours. I will never understand why, because I left the double car garage door open the entire day. But every time I checked on the bird it was still there bumping his head on the ceiling of my garage rather than flying out the door.
Every time I checked on the bird, I pointed to the door and told it to fly out the door as if it could understand me. Ten hours after I first saw it in my garage, I was concerned that it would die if I didn’t do something to help it get out the door. I went and got my pool net and carefully scooped the hummingbird in it. I took the bird in the pool net through the door and released it. I watched the bird fly off and wondered why in the world it kept doing the same thing for ten hours when the whole time, the door was right there, open and ready.
I could not help but think about Jesus as I AM the Door. Don’t we do that too? Determined to do things our way even when it doesn’t help us at all. And the whole time, the Door is right there, open and ready for us to step inside.
Jesus wants to be I AM the Door that is your pathway to freedom.
John 10:11- I AM the Good Shepherd
Shepherds were a big deal in Jesus’ day. It would have been a metaphor that communicated protection, provision, and welfare for His flock. In John 10:1-16, Jesus was speaking about dangers and strangers, thieves and robbers… He wanted them to see the real-life battle they would face. But He also wanted them to see that He was their answer.
Jesus’ declaration was made on the heels of Him giving them the enemy’s purpose statement and His own purpose statement.
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, but I have come that they may have life and life more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
Jesus was the one who could protect them when someone came with an evil plan, and He is the one who can protect us. He wants us to know Him as I AM the Good Shepherd who protects us when we listen to His voice.
John 11:25 – I AM the Resurrection and the Life
“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “Oh Death, where is your victory? O Hades, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57
Death has no victory because of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and His life. The original language definition of life describes the life that Jesus offers as the absolute fullness of life. I love what Hebrews 7:25 tells us about Jesus and the life that He lives.
Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)
Dear One, the Resurrection and the Life (abundant life and eternal life) is interceding on your behalf. While death is unavoidable, we can trust Jesus to be I AM the Resurrection and the Life.
John 14:6 – I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life
How many times have I prayed for God to give me direction in life? A lot! And how many times have I had other women share their prayer requests to know God’s direction in their lives? So many times!
In our world today, truth seems harder than ever to recognize. And it seems like few people, even Christians are living in the absolute fullness of life that is spoken of here.
Take a moment to think about what you need right now. Do you need direction? Do you need to know what is true in a situation? Are you tired of existing or maybe barely getting by? Jesus wants to be I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life for you in your present circumstances. Will you trust Him to be the answer for you?
John 15:5 – I AM the Vine.
In John 15:1-8 Jesus spoke to His disciples about the true vine. He wanted them to know that He was their source, that if they would bear fruit, it would come from them staying connected and abiding in Him. In speaking of the fruitful grapevine, commentaries note that it was considered an emblem of prosperity and blessings in Jesus’ day.
By now we should be quite confident in Jesus linking Himself as the source of life. However, I see many Christians uncomfortable with the talk of prosperity and blessings, but Jesus was not uncomfortable with an offering of prosperity and blessing.
The problem is not the offer, but the perspective. If our perspective of prosperity and blessing is simply monetary or material gain, then we missed the big picture. In Christ we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). In Christ, our soul prospers and is blessed; our relationships prosper and are blessed, and we can also experience prosperity and blessing in physical ways.
Jesus wants to be the rewarder to those who diligently seek Him to be I AM the Vine in their life? Will that be you?
Take a Moment to Finish God’s Statement
While we could find other places where there are I am statements in the Bible, I believe John gives us such a beautiful overview of who Jesus is. I no longer wonder how to complete the sentence that once puzzled me as a child. Now I understand that Jesus is I AM what I need in each and every moment of my life.
He is divine.He is God.
He is I AM everything that we will ever need.
We all have needs and circumstances in our lives. Take some time to identify what is going on in your life. Answer the question, “What is it that you need right now?” Look back through the ways Jesus spoke of Himself and finish the statement that you need Jesus to be in your life by filling in the blank
How will you finish the sentence? Jesus is I AM _____________________________.
Pray, seek, and trust Him to be what you need Him to be!

Q) What did Jesus mean when He said, “I AM”?
Jesus' use of “I AM” reveals His identity and divine nature. In Exodus 3:14, God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM.” Throughout John's Gospel, Jesus' I AM statements help us understand who He is and what He provides for those who trust Him.

Q) Why did Jesus call Himself the True Vine?
In John 15, Jesus used the picture of a vine and its branches to teach His disciples about remaining connected to Him. Q) How can I apply the I AM statements of Jesus to my life?
Begin by considering what you need in your present circumstances and then look at what Scripture reveals about Jesus. If you need direction, remember that He is the Way. If you are walking through darkness, He is the Light of the World. If you feel spiritually empty, He is the Bread of Life. If you need strength to bear fruit, remain connected to Him as the True Vine.
The I AM statements invite us not only to learn more about Jesus but also to trust Him more deeply.
